Aerodynamic Features of French Fricatives
نویسندگان
چکیده
The present research investigates the aerodynamic features of French fricative consonants using direct measurement of subglottal air pressure by tracheal puncture (Ps) synchronized with intraoral air pressure (Po), oral airflow (Oaf) and acoustic measurements. Data were collected from four Belgian French speakers’ productions of CVCV pseudowords including voiceless and voiced fricatives [f, v, s, z, ʃ, ʒ] . The goals of this study are: (i) to predict the starting, central, and releasing points of frication based on the measurements of Ps, Po, and Oaf; (ii) to compare voiceless and voiced fricatives and their places of articulation; and (iii) to provide reference values for the aerodynamic features of fricatives for further linguistic, clinical, physical and computational modeling research.

Aerodynamic tool for phonology of voicing
The paper addresses the question of the phonetic implementation of phonological voicing in French. It is investigated by means of aerodynamic measures made at the subglottal, glottal and supraglottal stages of the production of fricatives in modal voice and in soft and loud whisper for one speaker. The results show that the [±voice] feature is systematically associated only with the categorical...
متن کاملL1-L2 Interference: The Case of Final Devoicing of French Voiced Fricatives in Final Position by German Learners
This work is dealing with a case of L1-L2 interference in language learning. The Germans learning French as a second language frequently produce unvoiced fricatives in word-final position instead of the expected voiced fricatives. We investigated the production of French fricatives for 16 non-native (8 beginnerand 8 advanced-learners) and 8 native speakers, and designed auditory feedback to hel...
متن کاملRealizations of French voiced fricatives by German learners as a function of speaker level and prosodic boundaries
We analyzed the realizations of French voiced fricatives /,Ʒ/ by German learners of French as a function of learners’ levels and prosodic boundaries. Fricatives are embedded in sentences and appear in final position of an accentual group, but not in sentence final position. Results showed that the performance of the speakers is linked to the way they realized boundaries. In particular, we obse...
متن کاملEnd-to-End Acoustic Feedback in Language Learning for Correcting Devoiced French Final-Fricatives
This work aims at providing an end-to-end acoustic feedback framework to help learners of French to pronounce voiced fricatives. A classifier ensemble detects voiced/unvoiced utterances, then a correction method is proposed to improve the perception and production of voiced fricatives in a word-final position. Realizations of voiced fricatives contained in French sentences uttered by French and...
متن کاملThe Influence of Aerodynamic Constraints on the Shape and the Dynamics of Phonological Systems
This paper shows the contribution of aerodynamic constraints to understand the phonological phenomena of prominence and stress. Changes in the coordination and timing of glottal and oral gestures affect pressure and flow parameters that explain differences between singleton and geminated ejective and non ejectives fricatives and affricates in Amharic. Finally the effect of nasal airflow during ...
